Starting off the year with a new featured K9 team of the month. This month we are introducing Cpl. Benjamin Chiaravalle and his K9 partner Wes. Cpl. Chiaravalle has been a police officer, working for the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department for 4.5 years, and for the last 2 years, he has been partnered with K9 Wes. K9 Wes, and his brother K9 Dozer from Hartford PD, came from a breeder in Maryland. The team is certified in tracking, drugs, and evidence recovery. They have a lot of experience with 1.5 mile tracks and are credited with successfully finding a juvenile and a suicidal person while tracking. K9 Wes also has assisted with search warrants, and on one assist, he located 46 grams of cocaine in a residence. K9 Wes loves to play, and that is what drives his work. Any chance he gets to play fetch with a ball, fire hose, or Kong, that is where you will find him!

We are back with another featured team of the month. This one is a special one...why? Because it is also a BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!!! Introducing Cpl. Trent Martin and K9 Capone from the Burlington Police Department. Cpl. Martin has been a police officer with the department for 16 years and he was joined by K9 Capone just about 10 years ago. An even more fun fact?! 🎉TODAY IS K9 CAPONE'S 11TH BIRTHDAY!!🎉 The team is certified in patrol, drugs, and tracking and they have a long list of accomplishments for which their department should be very proud. Cpl. Martin & K9 Capone have been awarded the K9 Team of the Year in 2011 and 2013, Detection Team of the Year in 2012, and Patrol Team of the Year in 2014. In addition to those commendations, they have also been awarded two certificates of high achievement from the Burlington Police Department as well as having completed a life saving track in 2011. Cpl. Martin says his proudest deployment of K9 Capone was when he located evidence during a track of a dangerous and violent felon. This find was the key evidence to convicting and incarcerating the suspect for several decades. K9 Capone has put in a great deal of time and hard work to serve the State of Vermont, but he still loves to run around and play. Please join us in not only recognizing this team as this month's featured team, but also in wishing K9 Capone a very happy 11th birthday! September's Featured K9 Team is Cpl. Jason Porter and K9 Hatchi. Missy and Chris Banke, of Pinebrook Kennels, donated K9 Hatchi to the Milton Police Department, and they are the first K9 team for their department. The pair went through Patrol School in 2013 and Drug School in 2014. His lineage is Slovakian and he comes from a long line of police and military dogs. On his down time, K9 Hatchi enjoys playing catch and spending time with his handler. K9 Hatchi has also gained a reputation for being one of the hardest biting dogs in the program. Below are some examples of how K9 Hatchi and Cpl. Porter were able to use their training.
During 2015 K9 Hatchi helped locate a safe that was stolen during a burglary of a residence. The find helped lead to the suspects confessing about the crime. In the winter of 2016 the team assisted Essex Police at the conclusion of a pursuit. The suspects were thought to be armed with weapons and upon seeing and hearing K9 Hatchi, they surrendered without incident. In the winter of 2017 K9 Hatchi helped track and locate a male that had fled a motor vehicle stop in St. Albans. The suspect was located by K9 Hatchi under a mattress in a garage. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. August's Featured K9 Team is VT State Game Warden Rob Sterling and K9 Crockett.
Warden Sterling has been with the Vermont Fish & Wildlife since November of 1996. Prior to joining VT Law Enforcement, he was a member of the USCG for 3 years. His current partner is K9 Crockett, whom he has had for 3 years. K9 Crockett is Warden Sterling's second K9 partner. K9 Rufus had been his partner for 9 years, and is now enjoying retirement. The team is certified in tracking and evidence recovery as well as gun powder detection. K9 Crockett's passion in his work is tracking, as well as swimming! K9 Crockett can be credited with some very impressive work and below are two incidents of that. Opening day of the 2016 deer hunting season, K9 Crockett tracked a suspect who shot over another hunter’s head. K9 Crockett tracked him through the woods to his ATV parked on a roadway. The suspect then returned to his ATV where Warden Sterling was waiting for him and he was arrested. The suspect admitted to the incident and walking through the woods to his ATV and then getting in to a vehicle and leaving the scene. During the track, illegal baiting areas for deer were found. Because of K9 Crockett’s track, the suspect was charged with reckless endangerment, interfering with a lawful hunt, two counts of feeding deer, and one count of hunting over bait. K9 Crockett located a revolver that had been stuffed in to a wood chuck hole in a field in Poultney. The gun had been stolen from a residence.
